POS terminals in Italy, by year 2000-2023

In 2023, in Italy there were 3.25 million Point of Sales (POS) terminals. This number increased steadily since 2010, when the country counted approximately 1.35 million POS terminals. The increase went hand in the hand with the growth in the number of card payments at such terminals and the overall increasing popularity of cashless solutions.

Cashless solutions increasingly popular

Cashless solutions seem to be becoming more and more widespread in Italy. As mentioned before, card payments at POS increased steadily in the last few years, reaching 3 billion in 2018. A closer look at the methods of payments shows that the highest growth was to be seen in the number of debit card transactions. This figure increased more than twofold from 2009 to 2019, when the number of debit card payments in Italy reached 2.47 billion.

Italians spend more with cards

The increasing popularity of cashless payments is a trend all over the European Union. In fact, the total number of card payments in the EU reached 77.6 billion in 2018, increasing from 46.2 billion in 2013. Which means an average increase of almost 11 percent every year.
